Grow Grass in a Cup: Fast Plant Science for Preschoolers

Grass seeds are the fastest, most forgiving first plant for preschoolers to grow — they germinate in 3–5 days and grow visibly between observations, rewarding children's patience with rapid, dramatic progress. Growing grass in a paper cup gives each child ownership of their own growing experiment and creates a daily observation ritual that builds the habit of scientific attention to change over time.

What You'll Need

  • Paper or plastic cups (one per child)
  • Potting soil or seed-starting mix
  • Grass seed (ryegrass or wheatgrass sprout fastest)
  • Water sprayer
  • Sunny windowsill
  • Rulers for measuring growth

Growing Instructions

  1. Fill the cup with moist potting soil to about 2 cm from the top.
  2. Scatter grass seeds generously across the surface — no need to be sparse.
  3. Gently press seeds into the soil surface.
  4. Cover with a thin layer of soil and mist with a spray bottle.
  5. Place in a warm, bright location. Keep the surface moist (not waterlogged) daily.
  6. First sprouts appear in 3–5 days. Measure and draw daily.
  7. Once grown, children can decorate the cup as a face — the grass becomes the hair. Trim with scissors!

Science Vocabulary to Introduce

  • Germination: when a seed sprouts and begins to grow.
  • Seedling: a very young plant just emerged from the seed.
  • Roots, stem, blade (the grass leaf).
  • Photosynthesis: how plants make food from sunlight (introduce the concept simply).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the grass is not sprouting after 5 days?

Check for: soil that is too dry (water more often), soil that is too wet (poke a hole in the cup base for drainage), insufficient warmth (move to a warmer spot), or seeds planted too deep. Old seeds may also have low germination rates — use fresh seeds from the current season. Wheatgrass is the most reliable variety for indoor preschool growing and can be found at natural food stores as well as garden suppliers.
