Observe Caterpillar Growth: Life Cycle Science for Preschoolers

Raising caterpillars into butterflies provides one of the most complete life science experiences available to preschoolers: they witness the full life cycle from egg (or caterpillar) to adult butterfly over two to four weeks — a timeframe that feels long enough to be significant but short enough to maintain engagement. The metamorphosis moment itself — when the chrysalis becomes transparent and the folded butterfly is visible inside — produces genuine awe that no amount of pictures or videos can replicate.

How to Raise Butterflies at Home or in the Classroom

  1. Order a butterfly kit from a nature science supplier (painted lady caterpillars are most common and easiest).
  2. Place the cup of caterpillars and food in a warm location (around 22°C / 72°F).
  3. Observe daily: caterpillars eat constantly and grow visibly each day.
  4. When caterpillars climb to the lid and form J-shapes, chrysalis formation is beginning — do not disturb.
  5. Transfer the chrysalis-bearing lid carefully into the butterfly habitat net.
  6. Within 7–10 days, butterflies emerge — provide fruit slices for nutrition.
  7. Release outdoors after 2–3 days.

Observation Activities

  • Measure caterpillar length daily and graph growth.
  • Draw the caterpillar each day in a nature journal.
  • Compare the chrysalis color on day 1 vs. day 7 (it becomes transparent).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if we cannot obtain live caterpillars?

Look outdoors for local caterpillars — many species are available in gardens from spring through autumn. Identify the host plant for local butterfly species and look for eggs and caterpillars on the leaves. Alternatively, use videos (slow-motion metamorphosis footage is freely available) supplemented by a hands-on nature journal where children draw and record what they observe. Many nature centers and zoos also host butterfly exhibits where children can witness the life cycle in person.
