Plant Sunflower Seeds with Kids: Gardening for Preschoolers

Sunflowers are the ideal first plant for preschoolers because their growth is so dramatic and so fast. Within days of planting, a seed germinates and a seedling pushes through the soil. Within weeks, the plant is visibly taller than the child. Within months, a face-sized flower turns toward the sun with mathematical precision. Every stage of this process offers science, vocabulary, and genuine awe — and a sunflower seed costs almost nothing.

How to Plant Sunflower Seeds with Preschoolers

  1. Choose a large pot or outdoor garden bed — sunflowers need depth for their roots.
  2. Fill with potting soil to within 3 cm of the top.
  3. Let children press a seed about 2.5 cm deep with their finger.
  4. Cover, water gently, and place in the sunniest available location.
  5. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged — water every 2–3 days.
  6. Mark the pot with the date planted and the child's name.

Tracking Growth

  • Measure height weekly — children are often astonished that their plant grows faster than they do.
  • Graph measurements on a simple chart.
  • Draw the plant at each stage: seed, sprout, seedling, mature plant, flower, seed head.
  • Discuss: why does the sunflower face different directions at different times of day?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sunflower variety is best for children to grow?

Dwarf varieties (Sunspot, Teddy Bear, Big Smile) reach 30–60 cm and are excellent for pots — children can see the flower face-to-face. Giant varieties (Russian Mammoth, Skyscraper) grow 2–3 meters and produce the dramatic scale effect but require more space and staking. For a first growing experience, a medium-sized variety (60–120 cm) balances dramatic growth with manageable size. Avoid "pollen-free" varieties — pollinators need the pollen, and watching bees visit the flower is part of the educational experience.
