PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
An indoor herb garden on the kitchen windowsill creates daily sensory encounters with growing plants: children can pinch a basil leaf to smell the aromatic oil, rub rosemary between their fingers, or taste a mint leaf directly from the plant. These sensory experiences build positive associations with fresh herbs and vegetables that carry into more willingness to try them in food. The gardening care — watering, trimming, watching growth — builds responsibility and patience with visible, delicious results.
Let children harvest their own herbs: snipping chives with child scissors, pinching basil leaves from the top (which encourages bushier growth), stripping thyme leaves from the stem. Then use the herbs together: sprinkle chives on scrambled eggs, tear basil onto pasta, add mint to a glass of water. The connection between what children grew and what they eat is powerful — even children who ordinarily reject herbs will often taste them when they grew them themselves.
