Pinecone Christmas Trees: Holiday Craft for Preschoolers

Pinecone Christmas tree ornaments combine natural material collection, sensory art making, and holiday decoration creation in one satisfying project. Each pinecone becomes a miniature tree: green-painted or left natural, decorated with dots of white paint as snow, tiny pom-pom ornaments, and a star sticker at the tip. Children can collect the pinecones themselves from a nature walk, connecting the holiday craft to outdoor exploration.

Materials

  • Large open pinecones (collected from the ground)
  • Green spray paint (adult) or green tempera for hand-painting
  • White paint for snow (applied with a dry brush for a light snow effect)
  • Mini pom-poms as ornaments, attached with a toothpick and glue
  • Gold or silver star sticker for the top
  • Optional: fine glitter for sparkle
  • Ribbon loop glued to the base for hanging as an ornament

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get pinecones to fully open for crafts?

Fresh or damp pinecones close their scales tightly to protect seeds during wet weather — they open when conditions are dry and warm to release seeds when they can travel on the wind. To open pinecones for crafts: place them in an oven at 200°F (93°C) for 30–60 minutes. The dry heat causes the scales to open fully. This also dries out any sap and kills any insects. Once fully open and cooled, pinecones remain open in dry conditions and are ready for crafting.
