Egg Carton Caterpillars: Spring Craft for Preschoolers

Egg carton caterpillars are a classic preschool craft for good reason: the bumpy segment structure of an egg carton is a perfect caterpillar body requiring almost no preparation. Children paint the connected cups in rainbow colors, add pipe cleaner antennae, googly eyes, and drawn legs, and suddenly have a cheerful caterpillar ready to begin its lifecycle story. The craft connects to butterfly lifecycle learning and spring nature observation.

Materials

  • One egg carton (cardboard, not foam) cut into a row of 6–8 connected cups
  • Tempera paint in multiple colors
  • Googly eyes (2 per caterpillar)
  • Pipe cleaners for antennae (2 per caterpillar, pushed through holes in the first cup)
  • Black marker for legs and mouth
  • Optional: small pompom nose

Lifecycle Connection

  • Read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" as a companion story.
  • Discuss: egg → caterpillar → chrysalis → butterfly (complete metamorphosis).
  • Make paper butterfly wings to pair with the caterpillar — "your caterpillar could become this butterfly!"
  • Look for real caterpillars on plants outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a chrysalis and a cocoon?

A chrysalis is the pupa stage of a butterfly — a hardened shell formed from the caterpillar's own skin, not spun from silk. A cocoon is the silken covering spun by moths around their pupa stage. Butterflies form chrysalises; moths form cocoons. Both protect the pupa during the metamorphosis process, but they are structurally and materially different. Chrysalises are often beautifully colored and translucent; cocoons are fibrous and opaque. This distinction surprises most adults too — it's a great teaching moment for both parent and child.
