PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Pinecone bird feeders are one of the most satisfying nature crafts for preschoolers: they're genuinely useful (real birds eat from them), involve wonderful messy sensory experience (spreading peanut butter), and create an ongoing nature observation opportunity as birds arrive to feed. The craft takes 10 minutes to make but provides days or weeks of bird watching — and watching birds who came because of something you made is a profound early connection to wildlife stewardship.
Birds attracted to sunflower and mixed seed include chickadees, nuthatches, house finches, sparrows, and juncos. If suet or peanut butter is added, woodpeckers, blue jays, and starlings also visit. Hanging the feeder near a window at child height makes bird watching easy and immediate. Consider adding a field guide to common backyard birds to the windowsill near the feeder for identification practice.
