Leaf Crown Making: Fall Nature Craft for Preschoolers

Leaf crown making combines the pleasures of fall outdoor collection with wearable art creation. Children collect fallen leaves on a nature walk, select their favorites for color, shape, and size, then attach them to a cardstock crown band using tape or glue. The result — a magnificent wearable crown — inspires imaginative play and a second nature walk to find "the best leaf for my crown." Every leaf is different, making every crown unique.

Making the Crown

  1. Cut a strip of stiff cardstock about 4cm wide and long enough to circle the child's head, with 5cm extra to overlap.
  2. Go on a leaf collection walk — look for the most colorful, interesting-shaped leaves.
  3. Arrange leaves along the top edge of the crown band, overlapping slightly, colors alternating.
  4. Tape or glue each leaf firmly to the band.
  5. Fit to the child's head and staple or tape the ends together.
  6. Wear for royal fall play immediately.

Leaf Identification Extension

  • Use a field guide or leaf ID app to identify tree species from collected leaves.
  • Sort collected leaves by species, color, and shape before creating the crown.
  • Make bark rubbings from the same trees the leaves came from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do leaves change color in autumn?

Leaves are green during spring and summer because of chlorophyll, the pigment used in photosynthesis. As days shorten in autumn, trees stop producing chlorophyll, and as it breaks down, it reveals underlying pigments that were always present: carotenoids (yellow, orange) and in some species, newly produced anthocyanins (red, purple). Shorter days signal the tree to seal off its leaves and conserve water for winter — a remarkable physiological response to seasonal light change that preschoolers can observe directly.
