Freeze Dance with Emotions: Movement and Feelings for Preschoolers

Freeze dance with emotions adds an emotional literacy dimension to the classic freeze dance game. When the music stops, instead of just freezing, children freeze in a pose that shows a specific emotion — called out by the leader just before the music stops. "Freeze! Show me SURPRISED!" Children hold their surprised pose while others guess who has the most convincing expression. The game combines cardiovascular movement with conscious emotional expression and recognition.

How to Play

  1. Children dance freely to upbeat music.
  2. Leader pauses music and calls an emotion: "Freeze — HAPPY!"
  3. All players freeze in a happy pose — big smile, arms up, jumping in place.
  4. After 5 seconds, music resumes and dancing continues.
  5. Next pause: "Freeze — SCARED!" Children show scared faces and body language.
  6. Discuss the best poses: "What made that look so scared? Show me your face!"

Emotion Vocabulary for the Game

  • Basic: happy, sad, angry, scared, surprised, silly
  • Intermediate: excited, tired, frustrated, proud, worried, confused
  • Advanced: relieved, disappointed, jealous, embarrassed, nervous, grateful

Frequently Asked Questions

How does freeze dance support emotional literacy?

Embodying an emotion — making the body physically express it — requires accessing the emotion's associated sensations, facial configuration, and postural pattern. This embodied emotional encoding creates stronger memory and recognition than simply seeing a word or picture. Children who regularly practice expressing emotions physically show better facial emotion recognition accuracy, stronger emotional vocabulary, and more empathetic responses to others' emotional expressions in research studies.
