Feelings Charades: Emotional Literacy Game for Preschoolers

Feelings charades asks children to embody emotions through facial expression, body language, and gesture — without words. It's one of the most effective emotional literacy activities available because it requires children to consciously access how emotions look and feel, not just name them. The children watching must read non-verbal cues to identify the emotion — building exactly the empathetic reading skills that social competence requires.

Emotion Cards

Write or draw one emotion per card: happy, sad, angry, scared, surprised, excited, confused, proud, embarrassed, tired, worried, silly, frustrated, grateful, lonely. Start with 6–8 emotions children know, then add more complex ones as the game grows.

How to Play

  1. One player draws a card and reads it (or an adult reads it aloud privately).
  2. The player acts out the emotion using only body, face, and movement — no words or sounds.
  3. Other players guess the emotion.
  4. Discuss: "How did you know that was 'surprised'? What did you see?"
  5. Connect to real life: "When do you feel surprised? Tell me about a time."

Frequently Asked Questions

How does feelings charades build empathy?

Empathy requires two skills: recognizing what another person is feeling (cognitive empathy) and responding appropriately (affective empathy). Feelings charades builds cognitive empathy by training children to read non-verbal emotional signals — which carry 55% of emotional communication. Children who can accurately identify emotions in others are significantly more likely to respond with appropriate support, share resources, resolve conflicts peacefully, and build positive peer relationships. These outcomes are well-documented in social-emotional learning research.
