Emotion Matching Cards for Preschoolers: Feelings Literacy Activity

Emotion matching cards — photographs of faces expressing different feelings matched to word cards or emoji cards — build the emotional vocabulary and facial recognition skills at the heart of social-emotional literacy. Children who can accurately read emotional expressions, name them, and connect them to situations are far better equipped to navigate social interactions, regulate their own emotions, and respond empathetically to others. The concrete, visual nature of matching cards makes abstract emotional concepts tangible.

Making Emotion Cards

  • Print 8–12 facial expression photos from free stock photo sites (search "child showing emotion") and mount on cardstock.
  • Make matching word cards: happy, sad, angry, scared, surprised, excited, frustrated, proud, worried, embarrassed, calm, confused.
  • Optionally, make emoji cards using colored circles with drawn faces for a more abstract matching challenge.

Matching Games

  • Photo-to-word match: Pair each face photo with the correct emotion word.
  • Photo-to-emoji match: Match real faces to their emoji representations.
  • Memory game: Turn all cards face-down and flip two at a time — match pairs.
  • Story connection: "Show me a time you felt this way" for each matched pair.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many emotions should preschoolers learn to identify?

Research suggests that children who can name and recognize 10–15 distinct emotions (going beyond the basic four of happy, sad, angry, scared) show significantly better social competence and conflict resolution skills. More nuanced vocabulary — frustrated vs. angry, nervous vs. scared, proud vs. happy — allows children to describe their inner states more precisely, communicate needs more effectively, and empathize more accurately with others' varied emotional experiences. The goal is a rich, expanding emotion vocabulary, not a fixed list.
