Hair Salon Dramatic Play: Pretend Stylist for Preschoolers

A pretend hair salon creates the perfect conditions for preschool social language development: the stylist and customer relationship has a clear script — greeting, discussing preferences, working, admiring the result — which gives children a meaningful language framework to practice and extend. Hair salon play also incorporates scheduling (appointment book), sequencing (steps of styling), and fine motor actions (brushing, sectioning, using rollers).

Setting Up the Salon

  • Styling chair: A regular chair with a "cape" (an old towel or fabric) draped over the customer.
  • Mirror: A standing or wall mirror at child height.
  • Tools: Toy comb, brush, spray bottle with water, hair clips, rollers, headbands.
  • Styling products: Empty shampoo bottles, an unused hairdryer (cord removed), styling gel containers filled with lotion.
  • Appointment book: A notebook where children write/draw appointments.
  • Waiting area: Chairs with "magazines" (picture books work perfectly).

Language in the Salon

  • "Would you like a trim or something new today?"
  • "How short would you like it? Just the ends?"
  • "Would you like it curly or straight?"
  • "Let me show you in the mirror — how does that look?"

Frequently Asked Questions

Should children style each other's real hair?

Simple, gentle styling with real combs and brushes is fine if families are comfortable. Pulling, snipping, or using any heat tools should never happen in dramatic play. For classrooms or groups where hair styling could be sensitive (protective hairstyles, textured hair that requires care), use wigs on a wig stand, or dolls with styleable hair, so all children can participate equally and comfortably regardless of their own hair type or family preferences.
