Dentist Office Dramatic Play: Reduce Fear Through Pretend Play

Dentist-themed dramatic play is one of the most genuinely useful scenarios adults can offer preschoolers because it directly addresses a common source of anxiety. Children who have played "dentist" repeatedly before their first appointment approach the real experience with familiarity rather than fear. They know the role, they know the tools, they know the sequence — and that knowledge transforms an overwhelming unknown into a manageable familiar situation.

Setting Up the Dentist Office

  • Patient chair: A reclined position created with pillows or a reclining chair.
  • Dental tools: Toy dental kit (available at most toy stores), or: a toothbrush, mirror (small unbreakable), cotton balls, a popsicle stick as an "explorer."
  • Bib: A cloth napkin tucked under the chin.
  • X-rays: Black paper with white crayon "teeth" drawings to "read."
  • Prizes: Small stickers in a prize box — "for being brave."
  • Waiting room: Chairs with magazines and a sign-in sheet.

Vocabulary to Introduce

  • Dentist, hygienist, patient, cavity, X-ray, tooth enamel
  • "Open wide," "You're doing great," "Almost done"
  • Names of teeth: incisors, molars, canines (simplified)

Frequently Asked Questions

How does pretend play help with dental anxiety?

Anxiety often comes from unpredictability — not knowing what will happen or who is in control. Pretend play gives children repeated, low-stakes experiences with the dental scenario. Playing both roles (dentist and patient) is particularly powerful: when the child is the dentist, they are in complete control, which builds confidence. When they are the patient, the "dentist" (another child or adult) uses caring, predictable language. Over many repetitions, the dental office becomes familiar and non-threatening.
