PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
A pretend bakery is one of the richest dramatic play environments because it layers so many learning strands simultaneously. Children filling orders practice reading (the menu), counting (three croissants, please), social skills (taking a customer's order politely), and creativity (deciding what today's specials are). All of this happens through play, which means children are intrinsically motivated and deeply engaged without any sense that they are "doing school."
Use natural-colored or brown-tinted play dough for bread. Roll a long cylinder for a baguette; add small pinched edges. Flatten and roll the edges up for a croissant shape. Add tiny "seeds" by pressing real sesame seeds into the surface. For colorful pastries, add food coloring to white play dough — pink for strawberry tarts, yellow for lemon muffins. Bake play dough items in a low oven (110°C / 225°F) for 2–3 hours to harden them into permanent props.
