Decorate Plant Pots: Art Meets Gardening for Preschoolers

Decorating a plant pot transforms an ordinary gardening activity into a creative project with lasting meaning — every time the child sees their decorated pot on the windowsill, they remember making it, which deepens the connection to the plant growing inside. The pot-decorating process also provides excellent surface for different art techniques: painting on curved terracotta feels different from flat paper, and the material absorbs paint in ways that produce unique effects.

What You'll Need

  • Plain terracotta pots (4" to 6" diameter are ideal for children)
  • Acrylic paint (weathers better than tempera for outdoor pots)
  • Paintbrushes in varied sizes
  • Sponge pieces for texture
  • Permanent markers for fine details
  • Clear outdoor varnish (applied by adults only) to protect the design

Decoration Ideas

  • Polka dots in rainbow colors over a solid base color.
  • Hand print flowers: press a paint-covered hand on the pot, fingers = petals, palm = flower center.
  • Fingerprint patterns: rows of fingerprint dots in different colors.
  • Striped bands around the pot in 3–4 colors.
  • Child's name in large block letters with decorative swirls.
  • Mosaic look: paint irregular "tiles" with thin lines of dark paint between them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I seal decorated pots so they last outdoors?

Once acrylic paint is fully dry (at least 2 hours, preferably overnight), spray or brush a thin layer of clear outdoor varnish or Mod Podge Outdoor over the entire painted surface. Apply 2–3 light coats rather than one heavy coat for best adhesion. Allow to fully dry between coats. This seal protects the paint from rain and UV fading and makes the pot washable. Even unsealed acrylic paint on terracotta holds up reasonably well for a single growing season.
