PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Decorating a plant pot transforms an ordinary gardening activity into a creative project with lasting meaning — every time the child sees their decorated pot on the windowsill, they remember making it, which deepens the connection to the plant growing inside. The pot-decorating process also provides excellent surface for different art techniques: painting on curved terracotta feels different from flat paper, and the material absorbs paint in ways that produce unique effects.
Once acrylic paint is fully dry (at least 2 hours, preferably overnight), spray or brush a thin layer of clear outdoor varnish or Mod Podge Outdoor over the entire painted surface. Apply 2–3 light coats rather than one heavy coat for best adhesion. Allow to fully dry between coats. This seal protects the paint from rain and UV fading and makes the pot washable. Even unsealed acrylic paint on terracotta holds up reasonably well for a single growing season.
