Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Scooter boards — flat platforms on four swivel wheels — are a staple of elementary physical education for good reason. Lying on one and propelling with arms, or sitting and pushing with feet, targets completely different muscle groups than typical playground activities. Arm-propulsion in the prone position (lying face down) builds the shoulder strength essential for writing readiness; seated leg-propulsion develops hip flexors and leg coordination. Races, relays, and cargo-hauling games make every minute of scooter time feel like pure play.
Scooter boards designed for physical education (available from school supply stores) are built with safety in mind — low to the ground, wide stable base, smooth edges. Always establish a rule that fingers must be kept tucked in and away from wheels. Avoid scooter boards on carpet (they barely move) and on very slick floors where control is reduced. Foam-padded scooter boards provide extra comfort for prone activities.
