Animal Relay Races for Preschoolers: Gross Motor Movement Game

Animal relay races transform a classic movement game into a full-body imagination workout. Instead of simply running from cone to cone, children travel as specific animals — waddling like penguins, galloping like horses, slithering like snakes. Each animal requires a different movement pattern, challenging children to coordinate their bodies in novel ways while getting excellent cardiovascular exercise. The best part: every child finds their own version of "how a frog hops," making the activity inclusive and creative.

Animals and Movements

  • Frog: Two-footed squat jumps — crouch low, spring forward
  • Bear: Walk on hands and feet with straight legs (bear walk)
  • Crab: Hands and feet, belly up, walking sideways or backward
  • Penguin: Stand upright, arms at sides, waddle side-to-side with stiff legs
  • Snake: Slither on belly using arms to pull forward
  • Horse: Gallop with an exaggerated skipping motion, leading with one foot
  • Elephant: Stomp heavily with wide steps, swinging one arm as a trunk
  • Bunny: Two-footed hops forward, hands held like paws at chest
  • Duck: Squat low and walk in a waddle while quacking
  • Inchworm: Hands walk out to a plank, feet walk to meet hands, repeat

Relay Race Formats

  • Team relay: Two teams, each member travels to the cone and back as a specific animal before tagging the next.
  • Animal wheel: Place animal picture cards at stations around a circle; children move as that animal between stations.
  • Mix and match: Draw an animal card at the start line to discover which animal to be for each turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gross motor skills do animal movements build?

Each animal movement targets different gross motor skills. Bear walks build core strength and shoulder stability. Frog jumps develop explosive leg power and two-footed takeoff/landing. Crab walks build posterior chain strength and coordination. Snake slithering engages core muscles rarely used in upright activities. Cycling through multiple animals in one session gives children a comprehensive full-body workout while appearing to be pure imaginative play.

How do I manage a relay race with a large preschool group?

Keep teams small — 4–5 children per team — and run multiple parallel races simultaneously rather than having large teams with long waits. Display the animal name or picture card at the start so children know which movement to use. Pair a less-mobile animal (penguin waddle) with a faster one (bunny hop) when mixing difficulty levels. The goal is movement volume, not competitive fairness, so relax about perfect relay rules.
