Frog Jumping Contest: Preschool Jumping and Landing Skills

A frog jumping contest gives preschoolers a clear, motivating goal — jump as far as you can — while building the two-footed jump and land mechanics that underpin safe playground movement, dancing, and sports. The measurement component (marking where you landed with a piece of tape and comparing lengths) adds authentic early math learning: length comparison, ordering, and simple measurement with non-standard units.

Teaching the Frog Jump

  1. Starting position: Squat low with hands on the floor between knees (like a real frog).
  2. Crouch deep: Bend knees as much as comfortable — the deeper the crouch, the more power available.
  3. Explosive extension: Push off both feet simultaneously while swinging arms forward.
  4. Landing: Land on both feet simultaneously with bent knees — absorb the impact softly.
  5. Mark the spot: Where the heels land, place a piece of tape labeled with the child's name.

Math Extensions

  • Compare jump lengths: "Whose jump was longer? By how much?"
  • Measure in non-standard units: "Your jump was 4 shoe-lengths long."
  • Track progress: does your frog jump get longer with practice?
  • Make a jump graph: each child's tape strip becomes a bar on a class graph.

Frequently Asked Questions

What landing mechanics should preschoolers learn?

Safe landing technique — bending knees to absorb impact and landing on the ball of the foot before the heel — should be explicitly taught from the first jumping activities. Children who repeatedly land with straight, stiff legs place excessive force on joints and are at higher risk of lower extremity injuries as they progress to more dynamic movement. The "squat-jump-land soft" pattern becomes habitual with consistent practice.
