Sight Word Fishing: Reading Game for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners

Sight word fishing transforms what could be dry flashcard drilling into an engaging physical activity. Paper fish with sight words written on them, a paper clip attached to each, and a rod with a magnet dangling from the line — children "catch" fish and read the word to keep it. The fishing metaphor is instantly compelling, the magnetic attraction is satisfying, and the challenge of reading each catch creates authentic reading practice in a completely game-like context.

Making the Fishing Game

  1. Cut fish shapes from cardstock (or print fish outlines and cut out).
  2. Write one sight word on each fish: the, and, is, it, in, I, to, a, at, of — start with the Dolch pre-primer list.
  3. Attach a paper clip to each fish's "mouth."
  4. Make a rod: a stick with a length of string; tie a small magnet to the end.
  5. Scatter fish face-down in a "pond" (a blue blanket or blue-painted box).
  6. Children fish — when they catch one, read the word to keep it.

Variations

  • Number fishing: number words (one, two, three) or numerals
  • CVC word fishing: cat, dog, hat, sit, cup
  • Color word fishing: red, blue, green, yellow
  • Phonics fishing: fish with the same beginning sound go together

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most important sight words to teach first?

The Dolch pre-primer list (40 words) is the standard starting point: the, to, and, he, a, I, you, it, in, was, said, his, that, she, for, on, they, but, had, at, him, with, up, all, look, is, her, there, some, out, as, be, have, go, we, am, then, little, down, do. These 40 words make up approximately 50% of the words in most children's books, so mastering them dramatically reduces decoding burden and increases reading fluency.
