Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Learning to identify birds by their calls is one of the most practical and rewarding nature skills a person can develop — and preschoolers are ideally suited to it. Their auditory discrimination is excellent, their imitation skills are strong, and they haven't yet learned to filter out bird sound as background noise. A 15-minute outdoor listening session, combined with a few bird call recordings, can give children the vocabulary to identify chickadees, robins, cardinals, and crows for the rest of their lives.
Merlin Bird ID (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) is free, highly accurate, and can identify bird songs in real time using your phone's microphone. It's the best tool for bird call learning at any age and works across North America, Europe, and many other regions. The app also provides photos, range maps, and habitat information, making it a complete field guide in digital form. Use it alongside a child during outdoor sessions rather than having the child use the phone independently.
