Adding lavender essential oil to homemade playdough transforms a standard sensory activity into a genuinely calming experience. Lavender has well-documented relaxation effects, and the combination of the soothing scent with the kneading, rolling, and squeezing of playdough creates a powerful sensory toolkit for managing emotions. This playdough works beautifully as a transition activity, a winding-down ritual, or a self-regulation tool for children who need sensory grounding.
Stored in an airtight container at room temperature, this playdough lasts 3–4 months. In the refrigerator, it can last up to 6 months. The scent fades gradually — refresh by adding a few more drops of lavender oil and kneading them in. Signs that playdough needs replacing: it becomes sticky and cannot be kneaded smooth, visible mold appears, or the smell turns unpleasant (which usually doesn't happen if stored properly).
In playdough, where children are not consuming the oil but benefit from inhalation of the scent, lavender is generally considered safe for children over age 2. Do not apply undiluted essential oil directly to children's skin. Children with asthma or fragrance sensitivities should use unscented playdough. If a child is sensitive to the scent, simply omit the lavender oil from this recipe and enjoy the plain playdough — all other properties remain identical.
