Cinnamon Playdough Recipe: Warm Sensory Play for Preschoolers

Cinnamon playdough smells like a bakery and looks like gingerbread — two associations that already make it irresistible to preschoolers before they even touch it. The brown-toned, warmly scented dough lends itself naturally to autumn play: baking "gingerbread" cookies, rolling "apple pie" filling, making "cinnamon rolls" — all rich dramatic play built from a simple sensory material.

Cinnamon Playdough Recipe

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg (optional, deepens the warm scent)
  • 1½ cups boiling water (adult handles)
  • Brown food coloring (optional — the cinnamon alone creates a tan color)

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, salt, cream of tartar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  2. Add oil and any food coloring.
  3. Pour in boiling water (adult) and stir immediately until a dough forms.
  4. Cool for 5 minutes, then knead until smooth.

Autumn Play Ideas

  • Provide cookie cutters in leaf and apple shapes for seasonal baking play.
  • Add small cinnamon sticks as "logs" or "rolling pins."
  • Use the dough alongside fall nature items: acorns, seed pods, small pumpkins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will cinnamon playdough stain hands or surfaces?

Cinnamon can leave a faint brownish tint on light surfaces if left for extended contact. Wipe tables immediately after use and wash hands after play. The staining is minor and washes off easily from hands. On wooden surfaces, wipe up promptly. The color benefit — that warm, gingerbread brown — is generally worth the minor cleanup care.
