PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Kinetic sand behaves unlike any other material. It flows like wet sand when poured, holds its shape when pressed, and sticks only to itself — not to hands, tables, or clothing. Preschoolers find it almost hypnotically satisfying: the way it holds a crisp mold but slices with a soft "thud," the way it flows in slow motion. It's one of the most popular sensory materials in occupational therapy for good reason — it provides deep pressure input and focused tactile feedback that calms the nervous system while building hand strength.
Mix thoroughly. The mixture should hold together when squeezed but crumble at the edges.
Mix thoroughly with hands until sand clumps together. Add tiny amounts of conditioner if too dry. This version is fragrant and soft, and children love helping mix it.
Commercial kinetic sand is non-toxic and safe for children 3 and older. It is not appropriate for children who still mouth objects, as ingesting sand can cause digestive issues. DIY versions using play sand and conditioner are similarly safe — the conditioner is non-toxic. All versions should be stored in sealed containers to prevent drying out.
Commercial kinetic sand is designed to stay moldable indefinitely if stored in a sealed container. DIY versions may dry out after a few weeks — simply spritz with a small amount of water and re-knead to restore the texture. Store all kinetic sand in an airtight container between uses.
Kinetic sand is remarkably self-cleaning — most particles cling to themselves rather than spreading. Use a fine-mesh sieve or your hands to gather it all together (it pulls off surfaces easily). Let any residue on hands air-dry, then brush off. Avoid washing kinetic sand down drains — it can clog pipes. Vacuum any fine stray particles from floors.
