PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Cloud dough is possibly the most sensory-satisfying material you can make in 5 minutes. It's silky between the fingers, holds impressions perfectly like firm sand, and crumbles with a deeply satisfying texture when you squeeze and release. Made from just two ingredients found in any pantry, it's one of the cheapest sensory activities available and one that preschoolers genuinely can't put down. The soft, powdery texture is particularly calming for children who need a gentler sensory input than traditional messy play.
Cloud dough stored in an airtight container or zip-lock bag lasts 4–6 weeks at room temperature. If it begins to smell rancid (the oil can go off over time), discard and make a fresh batch. Adding a few drops of essential oil as a preservative and scent helps extend the fresh smell. Do not refrigerate — this can cause the flour to absorb moisture and clump.
Cloud dough is made from food-safe ingredients — flour and oil — and is non-toxic if small amounts are ingested accidentally. However, it is not intended as food and eating large amounts could cause digestive upset. Supervise children who still mouth materials. It is not appropriate as a sensory activity for children with wheat/gluten allergies — substitute rice flour for a gluten-free version.
Cloud dough (flour + oil) is soft, silky, and completely dry to the touch, with a fine powdery texture. It molds well but crumbles at the edges. Kinetic sand (sand + silicone) is heavier, grittier, and feels more like wet sand. Kinetic sand holds shapes more precisely and doesn't crumble in the same way. Cloud dough is better for children who prefer light, soft textures; kinetic sand is better for children who prefer the weight and graininess of real sand.
