Flower Shop Dramatic Play: Pretend Florist for Preschoolers

A flower shop gives children a beautiful environment in which to practice the full range of social transaction language: "How may I help you?" "I'd like a bouquet for my mother." "Would you like to add a card?" The flowers themselves — made from tissue paper, coffee filters, or craft foam — provide hours of making before the shop even opens, and the arranging, wrapping, and selling extends the play for days.

Setting Up the Flower Shop

  • Flowers: Tissue paper pom-pom flowers, coffee filter blooms, foam flowers, or real dried flowers.
  • Vases: Plastic cups, small bottles, recycled containers.
  • Wrapping supplies: Tissue paper and ribbon for bouquet wrapping.
  • Price tags: Small cards with flower names and prices.
  • Shop sign: A painted or drawn sign with the shop's name.
  • Cards: Small cards children can "write" to include with arrangements.

Language Learning in the Flower Shop

  • Flower names: rose, daisy, sunflower, tulip, lily — vocabulary expansion.
  • Color mixing vocabulary: "Would you like red and white together?"
  • Occasion language: "Is this for a birthday, or just because?"
  • Describing words: fragrant, delicate, vibrant, cheerful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extend flower shop play over multiple days?

Introduce new elements each day: Day 1 — make flowers and open the shop. Day 2 — add a delivery service (children deliver flower "orders" to other rooms). Day 3 — introduce a special order system (customers describe what they want and the florist creates it). Day 4 — host a flower show where arrangements are judged for beauty and creativity. Each new element extends engagement and introduces new vocabulary and skills.
