Musical Storytelling: Narrative and Music for Preschoolers

Musical storytelling — where each character in a story is represented by a specific instrument or musical theme — develops both narrative and musical thinking simultaneously. The format is simple: as you tell a story, assign a sound or instrument to each character (the frog hops when we tap the drum; the princess walks when we play the triangle; the storm comes when we shake the maracas). Children listen for their character's theme and respond with movement or sound, combining active listening with creative, physical engagement.

Simple Musical Story Setup

  • Choose a simple familiar story with 3–4 characters (Three Bears, Three Billy Goats, Jack and the Beanstalk)
  • Assign one sound to each character: drum, triangle, maracas, clapping, knee tapping
  • Children choose or are assigned a character and make their sound whenever their character appears
  • The adult narrates; children listen carefully for their cue

Extension: Original Musical Stories

  • Children create their own story and decide which instrument represents each element.
  • Weather sounds: rain (finger tapping), thunder (drum), wind (shaker), sunshine (triangle)
  • Record the performance and play back — children delight in hearing their own musical story.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the relationship between music and narrative development?

Both music and narrative are temporal arts — they unfold over time in a structured sequence with tension, resolution, and emotional arc. Children who engage with musical storytelling develop sensitivity to this temporal structure in both domains simultaneously. Research shows that music training in early childhood — including informal experiences like musical storytelling — is associated with stronger narrative comprehension, phonological awareness, and reading development. The shared temporal and structural properties of music and language appear to create mutual benefit.
