PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Rolling balls down ramps is physics at its most accessible: set up the ramp, choose the ball, release, observe, compare. Children discover through direct experience that a steel ball rolls faster than a foam ball, that a steeper ramp makes every ball go faster, and that a heavy ball can knock something over while a light one cannot. These observations are the foundation of understanding gravity, friction, momentum, and mass — taught entirely through play.
Use the same ramp angle for every ball. Mark where each ball stops rolling with a piece of tape and write the ball's name on the tape. At the end, compare all the tapes and rank order from furthest to nearest. Taking measurements in centimeters with a ruler adds a math component and introduces distance measurement. Keep a simple chart of results — even children who cannot read numbers enjoy seeing the relative lengths of the tape strips.
