A baking soda rocket—a film canister or small container powered by the pressure of a vinegar-and-baking-soda reaction—is one of the most reliably exciting science experiments you can do with a preschooler. The canister launches with a satisfying pop, flies several feet into the air, and lands somewhere completely unpredictable. The chemistry is identical to the balloon experiment, but the physical consequence—a flying, bouncing projectile—makes the force of the reaction viscerally real.
The experiment directly demonstrates Newton's Third Law: the gas pushes down, and the equal opposite force pushes the rocket up. You don't need to name Newton's Law for this to be real physics—the child who watches the canister launch has felt Newton's Third Law.
1. Decorate the rocket (optional).
Roll a paper cone and tape it to the bottom of the canister (which becomes the top of the rocket). Add paper fin cutouts. The canister lid end faces down—that's where the launch happens.
2. Prepare the launch pad.
Find a flat outdoor surface. Have everyone stand back at least 3 feet. This is not a mellow-kitchen-table experiment—it's an outdoor launch experiment.
3. Load the propellant.
Pour a teaspoon of vinegar into the canister. Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to the inside of the lid (so it's separate from the vinegar until you snap it on). Work quickly for steps 4–5.
4. Snap and place.
Quickly snap the lid onto the canister. Immediately place the canister lid-down on the launch pad. Step back immediately.
5. Launch!
Within 5–30 seconds, the reaction builds enough pressure to pop the lid, and the rocket launches. The delay varies—part of the excitement is not knowing exactly when.
6. Repeat and vary.
Try different amounts of each ingredient. Try a warmer or cooler day. Can you make it go higher? Does adding more baking soda make a difference? This is genuine experimental design.
The first launch is always followed by immediate silence, then screaming, then "AGAIN." The unexpectedness of the pop, the genuine surprise of the direction, and the physical reality of something flying through the air from a reaction in a small container makes this experiment land differently than most chemistry demonstrations. It's not just interesting—it's kinetic and unpredictable and alive.
