After catching your preschooler staring at the night sky, you may be wondering how to teach astronomy to your preschooler. At this age, you'll want to stick with simple science projects; you don't have to teach them the constellations, or specifics about our solar system. However it's easy to do some simple science activities to teach preschool astronomy.
Preschool Space Activity - Building a Planetarium with your Preschooler
Is your preschooler fascinated with the stars? Have you taken your preschooler to a planetarium yet? Whether or not you have, you can teach your preschooler how to create their own planetarium with this easy preschool space activity. You and your preschooler can actually simulate the night sky within your home with this fun and easy preschool space activity.
Preschool Astronomy - The Shapes of the Moon
Most preschoolers are fascinated with the moon. It's the brighest object in the night sky and many children think the moon follows them on long car rides. Use this fun science activity to teach your preschooler the shapes (phases) of the moon and how the moon changes over the course of a month.
Teach peschoolers all about the phases or shapes of the moon with this fun filled space book for preschoolers. For preschool educators, or anyone interested in teaching preschoolers, this book shares invaluable experiments and information so preschoolers can learn all about the moon. This preschool science book will help preschoolers become interested in space.
Preschoolers and Temper Tantrums
There are reasons why preschoolers have temper tantrums. (And no, they're not just to drive you up a wall!) Once you understand the triggers, you can develop ways of defusing your little dynamo before blast off.
Melting Magic with Caramel Apples
Introduce preschoolers to the concept of solids, liquids, and gases while making caramel apples. Preschoolers and parents discuss scientific concepts while melting caramel for apples! Preschoolers engage in critical thinking skills as they are introduced to the concept of "melting."
"Unexpected" is the word to use rather than "wrong" β in science, results that don't match predictions are the most interesting. "The result was different from what we expected β that means we discovered something! Let's figure out why." This reframe makes the unexpected result a success rather than a failure, because it produced a question worth investigating. Science confidence is built by treating all results as valid data, never as failure.
Commercial science kits designed for ages 4+ can be engaging starting points. Look for kits that use simple, safe materials and produce visually dramatic results (crystal growing kits, volcano kits, solar system model kits). Avoid kits with very small parts, complex safety requirements, or expected outcomes that are frustrating when not achieved. The best kits are those that leave children wanting to experiment further beyond the kit's instructions β look for kits with extension activities built.
