PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Washing dishes is both a practical life skill and a wonderful sensory water activity that preschoolers typically love. The combination of warm soapy water, scrubbing with a brush, rinsing, and placing in a drying rack gives children a complete sequence of steps to master — and the result is a genuinely clean dish that the family uses. Starting with plastic dishes eliminates breakage risk while providing authentic washing practice.
Children can begin washing their own plastic cups and bowls around age 2.5–3 with close supervision. Most 4-year-olds can wash a small set of plastic dishes largely independently. By age 5–6, children can handle a full set of their own dishes. Glass and sharp items are introduced later based on the individual child's coordination and judgment. The Montessori recommendation is to begin practical life water activities as early as 18–24 months with appropriate setup and supervision — children are ready and eager far earlier than many parents expect.
