Compliment ball toss is a simple but powerful social-emotional activity: sit in a circle, toss a soft ball to a person, and say a genuine compliment to them as they catch it. The physical action of tossing and catching, combined with the social action of giving and receiving appreciation, creates a multi-sensory experience of positive communication. Children who regularly practice giving and receiving compliments develop the social language, eye contact, and other-directed attention that underpin strong friendships.
Many children deflect, deny, or feel awkward receiving compliments — this is normal and reflects underdeveloped other-directed attention and discomfort with positive evaluation. Teaching children to simply say "thank you" and maintain brief eye contact when receiving a compliment is a genuine social skill that requires practice. Children who can gracefully receive compliments tend to have stronger self-efficacy and more reciprocal friendships than those who consistently redirect or minimize positive feedback.
