Witch Potion Sensory Bin

Witch Potion Sensory Bin

Bubbling, mysterious, and slightly gross — a witch's potion sensory bin filled with green-dyed water, spider rings, rubber eyeballs, plastic spiders, and dry ice (or baking soda + vinegar for safe bubbling) is Halloween sensory play at its finest.

What You'll Need

  • Green-dyed water — in a large cauldron or black bin
  • Halloween sensory items — rubber spiders, spider rings, plastic eyeballs, skull beads, plastic snakes
  • Ladles and spoons — for stirring the potion
  • Funnel and small bottles — for "bottling" the potion
  • Baking soda and vinegar — for safe bubbling (add vinegar to baking soda in the water for fizzing)
  • Optional: dry ice — for dramatic fog effect (adult supervision required)

How to Do It

Step 1: Set up the bin. Fill with green water and add all the spooky items.

Step 2: Add fizz. Sprinkle baking soda into the water and add a splash of vinegar. Watch it bubble!

Step 3: Stir the potion. Children stir with ladles, adding more baking soda for more bubbles.

Step 4: Bottle the potion. Children use funnels to "bottle" their potions in small plastic bottles.

Step 5: Label. Make potion labels: "Eye of Newt," "Wing of Bat," "Witch's Brew."

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Dramatic play — Witch/wizard role play is rich imaginative territory.

Chemical reaction observation — Baking soda + vinegar bubbling is a first chemistry experience.

Tips & Variations

  • Add glitter for extra sparkle.
  • Provide small bottles with cork stoppers for more authentic potion-bottling.

My Two Cents

The bubbling reaction is the hook — children will want to add vinegar (or baking soda) repeatedly to make it fizz again. Have extra of both available and let the experiment run!
