Tearing and gluing small squares of orange tissue paper onto a pumpkin outline creates a richly textured mosaic that catches light beautifully. The tearing process — no scissors required — makes this perfect for even the youngest crafters.
Step 1: Draw the pumpkin. Draw a large pumpkin outline on black paper — black background makes the orange pop.
Step 2: Tear tissue. Children tear orange tissue paper into small irregular squares, about 1 inch.
Step 3: Apply. Brush diluted glue onto a small section of the pumpkin, press tissue squares onto it, overlapping slightly. Continue until the pumpkin is filled.
Step 4: Add stem and leaves. Fill the stem and leaves with green tissue.
Step 5: Seal. Brush a final layer of diluted glue over everything to seal.
Fine motor tearing — Tearing paper to a specific size requires controlled finger strength.
Mosaic composition — Filling a shape by covering it piece by piece is a foundational art technique.
The smaller the tissue pieces, the more refined the mosaic looks — but smaller pieces require more time and patience. Choose the square size based on your group's age and attention span.
