Halloween Costume Exchange

πŸŽ“ Skills Your Child Will Develop

  • 🧠 Real vs. Pretend Thinking β€” Processing the Halloween experience β€” monsters that are really people in costumes, scary things that are decorations β€” develops sophisticated real-vs.-pretend thinking that is a foundational cognitive milestone.
  • 🌍 Cultural & Community Awareness β€” Halloween traditions connect children to community, seasonal celebration, and cultural continuity β€” building the sense of belonging and shared experience that community identity requires.
  • πŸ›‘οΈ Safety Awareness β€” Following Halloween safety rules β€” staying with an adult, checking candy, crossing streets carefully β€” builds the safety awareness and rule-following that protect children in public settings.
  • πŸ’¬ Vocabulary & Storytelling β€” The rich vocabulary of Halloween β€” haunted, mysterious, transformation, legend β€” and the storytelling occasions it creates expand language range and narrative thinking in a culturally rich context.
Let's face it, Halloween costumes are only worn once. Children never want to wear the same Halloween costume the following year, and when they're young, they grow so much that they wouldn't fit into their Halloween costume again even if they wanted to!

Have you seen the prices of Halloween costumes these days? Halloween costumes can cost as much as $50! And if you have two or more children needing Halloween costumes, this can get very costly. Well, no need to fret this Halloween. PreschoolRock.com is holding a Hallween Costume Exchange!

Search The Free Halloween Costumes!

What is the Halloween Costume Exchange?

The Halloween Costume Exchange allows parents to find free Halloween costumes for their children -- any age! It also allows parents to post their children's Halloween costumes from previous years to help other parents find free Halloween costumes for their children.

Who Can Participate in the Halloween Costume Exchange?

Anyone who has a Halloween costume to donate OR has a Halloween costume they need for their child.

Do I Need to Donate A Halloween Costume In Order to Get One Free?

No! Not everyone saves Halloween costumes from year-to-year, so even if you don't have a Halloween costume to donate, you can still contact a parent (donator) to request the Halloween costume for your child. However, we would surely appreciate it if you'd spread the word to your friends about the Halloween Costume Exchange program in case they may have Halloween costumes to donate.

How Does the Halloween Costume Exchange Work?

Parents seeking free Halloween costumes:
  • Look through the listings of free Halloween costumes
  • When a desirable Halloween costume is found, the parent contacts the Halloween costume donator via email to arrange for shipment
  • Parent receives Halloween costume in the mail just in time for Halloween!

Parents wanting to donate a Halloween costume:

  • Helpful Tips for Parents - Halloween offers a natural opportunity to discuss the difference between real and pretend. Preschoolers who understand "monsters in costumes" versus "monsters in stories" versus "real" develop critical thinking. - Post-Halloween, sort candy together: a math activity (count, sort by type, compare quantities). Then allow the child to choose their daily candy ration from their sorted collection. - Involve children in pumpkin selection β€” let them choose at the pumpkin patch or grocery store. Ownership of their pumpkin increases investment in the decorating and carving process. - Reflective tape on costumes and trick-or-treat bags significantly improves visibility in the dark. A safety measure that takes 2 minutes and lasts all evening. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What Halloween costumes are most appropriate for preschoolers? The most developmentally appropriate preschool Halloween costumes are: comfortable (no restrictive breathing or movement), non-scary (the child's own costume shouldn't frighten them in the mirror), vision-unobscured (masks are problematic β€” use face paint or no mask versions), weather-appropriate (warm layers underneath), and child-chosen (a child wearing their own choice is far more comfortable and engaged than one in a parent-chosen costume). Animals, superheroes, favorite book characters, and community helpers are perennial preschool successes.
