Candy Corn Color Sort

Candy Corn Color Sort

Real candy corn or foam candy corn pieces make a perfect Halloween sorting and counting activity. Children sort by color (yellow, orange, white), count, graph, and compare — turning Halloween candy into a math lesson.

What You'll Need

  • Candy corn — a bag of real candy corn, or foam/felt pieces for reuse
  • Sorting mats — three sections labeled yellow, orange, white
  • Small cups or bowls — one per color
  • Number cards — 1–20 for counting
  • Simple graph paper — for recording counts

How to Do It

Step 1: Sort. Children sort candy corn by color section — yellow tip, orange middle, white base.

Step 2: Count each group. Count the pieces in each color section.

Step 3: Graph. Color in bars on a simple graph to show which color has the most pieces.

Step 4: Compare. "Which has the most? Which has the fewest? How many more yellow than white?"

Step 5: Eat! Real candy corn gets eaten as the reward. Foam pieces get stored for next year.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Sorting by attribute — Categorizing objects by color is a foundational math skill.

Counting with one-to-one correspondence — Touching and counting each piece builds number sense.

Data representation — Recording counts on a graph is an early statistics skill.

Tips & Variations

  • Count by 2s or 5s for older children.
  • Use candy corn to create patterns: yellow-orange-white, repeat.
  • Write number sentences: "5 yellow + 4 orange = 9 pieces."

My Two Cents

Foam candy corn pieces (available at craft stores) are wonderful for this activity because they can be used year after year. For the Halloween party version, real candy corn is the perfect motivation — every child is extremely careful with their sorting when they know they get to eat the result!
