Preschool Winter Activities

Helpful Tips for Parents

  • Outdoor play surfaces (grass, dirt, sand, bark chips) are better for development than flat concrete or carpet — uneven surfaces challenge balance and proprioception naturally.
  • Fine motor and gross motor development support each other. Children who move well also develop hand strength and coordination more effectively.
  • Physical play with parents — wrestling, piggyback rides, tickling, rough-and-tumble — builds the parent-child bond and develops physical confidence in ways solo play doesn't.
  • Water play (pools, sprinklers, water tables) is among the most physically intensive activities available — children move constantly and use their whole body without realizing they're exercising.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is yoga appropriate for preschoolers?

Preschool yoga is not only appropriate but genuinely beneficial — it develops balance, strength, flexibility, and body awareness. More importantly, it teaches preschoolers the foundational self-regulation skills of breath awareness and still-body practice. Children's yoga programs (Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube is a popular free resource) frame poses as animals and characters, making the practice engaging. 10–15 minutes of child-appropriate yoga is appropriate daily from age 3.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

  • 🧠 Brain-Body Connection — Research consistently shows that physical activity directly improves concentration, working memory, and academic readiness — making fitness time one of the highest-return educational investments in a preschooler's day.
  • 🌱 Lifelong Active Habits — Children who have joyful physical experiences in the preschool years are dramatically more likely to be active adolescents and adults — making every positive movement experience an investment in lifelong health.
  • 🏃 Gross Motor Skills — Running, jumping, hopping, and climbing build the large muscle strength, coordination, and body control that physical activities, sports, and even handwriting readiness depend on.
  • 🧭 Spatial Awareness — Moving through and around obstacles, understanding where their body is in space, and following directional instructions develops the spatial body awareness that sports, dance, and coordinated movement require.

Preschool Winter Activities

With the temperatures turning colder and snow beginning to fall in some parts of the world, it's easy to want to move activities indoors where it's warm. Outdoor preschool winter activities are abundant, so don't let those cold temperatures get you down! The fresh winter air can be refreshing and the activities can have a lot of fitness benefits. Besides, when you come back into the warm house, you can always fix some treats and snuggle under a cozy blanket together.

Snowy Preschool Winter Activities

If you're blessed with a snowy climate, there are a number of fun outdoor options you can enjoy with your preschooler.

Snow Angels - Take a step back to your childhood and make snow angels with your preschooler. It will definitely bring out the kid in you too!

Winter Walks - Whether you just put on big boots and stomp through the snow or purchase child-sized snowshoes, there is so much joy in walking in the brisk winter air, enjoying nature and one another.

Snowmen - What a simple pleasure! Snowman, snowgirl, snowdog, snow dinosaur, or snowboy, it doesn't matter! Kids and adults get a big workout when they roll those snowballs bigger and bigger. Don't forget to accessorize your snow creation with a hat, scarf, mittens, pinecones, buttons and more!

Snow Forts - This may be more of a workout for the adult, but children can help with this preschool winter activity too! Snow blocks can be made with a summer planter or with a specific snow fort block mold. Your preschooler can help by filling and packing the mold, then you can plop it out together and lift it onto your fort. Let your child guide the design -- but be aware, this activity can take some time!

Sledding - Preschool children love the prospect of sledding. Whether you have a simple sled, a toboggan, or one of the fancier sleds, there's nothing like the thrill of zooming down a wintry hill. You and your preschooler will reap the fitness benefits of walking back up to the top of the summit!

Animal Tracking - Winter snow provides a great way to learn about animals by looking at their tracks. Help your child identify the animals that may have tracked through your backyard or local park - it's a great learning opportunity!

Cold Winter Tips

When planning preschool winter activities, keep a close eye on the weather forecast. If the wind chill is very cold or temperatures dip too low, you may want to keep the fun inside. Dress your preschooler warmly with several loose-fitting layers of clothing, bundling up in snow pants and a warm coat (or a snowsuit), and keeping extremities warm with waterproof boots, a cozy hat, mittens and scarf. Be sure that kids are comfortable and not wearing clothing that is too tight. Half the battle is getting dressed, but it's always worth it when you get out into the magical snow!
