Movement exploration is a way of teaching children, an effective tool that allows preschoolers to explore spatial relationship skills using large muscle groups and thinking skills. Movement exploration is a method of teaching children that uses a process.
Many movement exploration activities can be done with no equipment. Even more movement exploration activities can be done with a few inexpensive props such as hoops, balls, washcloths, towels, crepe paper streamers, bean-bags and stuffed animals.
An adult leads preschoolers by giving physical directions posed as a challenge, simple fitness tasks that preschoolers complete using the guidelines in the directions. For preschoolers, movement exploration activities are similar to going on an imaginary adventure. Preschoolers might be asked to walk on a line on the floor holding a lummi stick and pretend they are tightrope walkers in the circus. Preschoolers might be told to move like an animal of their choice while traveling from one side of the room to the other. Preschoolers might be given directions to balance on 3 body parts, then four body parts.
Traditional games usually have a competitive goal such as winning or getting others out of the game. Traditional games usually have specific rules to follow. Movement exploration never involves sitting out of the game so preschoolers stay active the entire time. Movement exploration gives all preschoolers the same challenges and choices. Challenging tasks are given in a way that allows for individual ability levels and individual decision making skills.
A.Think of a basic physical skill that preschoolers can do or are learning to do such as jumping, hopping, waving or balancing.
B. Think of a relationship concept that preschoolers can explore such as big-small, high-low, fast-slow or inside-outside.
A + B = Movement Exploration
Gallop inside of your hoop on the floor.
Now gallop outside of your hoop on the floor.
Balance on 4 body parts.
Balance on 3 body parts.
Wave your streamer high.
Wave your streamer low.
After learning to give simple directions, enhance movement exploration more by adding pretend play and dramatic play elements to the movement experience for preschoolers. Parents and preschool teachers can create simple and fun movement exploration activities based on party themes, holidays, field trips and education units.
Example
You are a prancing pony in the circus. The hoop on the floor is your little stage. Ponies stand on your stage and prance around. Ponies gallop in a small circle on your stage. Now ponies step off of your stage and gallop around the circus tent (the room). As you gallop, ponies, gallop around the other pony stages. Ponies gallop slowly. Now ponies gallop fast. Ponies stop. Ponies gallop to your same stage and jump up on your stage. Ponies balance on four legs. Pones balance on 1 leg. Ponies, jump off of your stage and gallop to a different stage and jump onto the stage. Ponies balance on 3 legs. Now jump off of the stage and gallop around the circus tent. This time, as you gallop around the circus tent, jump up on the ponies stages in the circus tent and then jump off and keep galloping.

Preschool yoga is not only appropriate but genuinely beneficial — it develops balance, strength, flexibility, and body awareness. More importantly, it teaches preschoolers the foundational self-regulation skills of breath awareness and still-body practice. Children's yoga programs (Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube is a popular free resource) frame poses as animals and characters, making the practice engaging. 10–15 minutes of child-appropriate yoga is appropriate daily from age 3.
