Rafting with Preschoolers - Outdoor Fitness Activity

Is My Preschooler Ready to Go Rafting?

Preschoolers Must Meet a Weight Requirement – Most rafting companies have a weight requirement so some petite sized preschoolers may not weigh enough to meet the requirement of the rafting company.

Best for Preschoolers Who Like Adventure – Rafting is a new experience and will be exciting for many preschoolers. However some elements of rafting may frighten preschoolers more than delight them.

Planning a Rafting Trip with Preschoolers

Choose a Short Rafting Trip - Choose the shortest trip available in your area. Rafting requires that preschoolers sit in the raft and preschoolers need to move often.

Ask Questions While Planning – When rafting with preschoolers, ask lots of questions to the rafting company or the rafting guide. For instance, you might ask how many preschoolers raft each week with their rafting company.

Plan Breaks During the Rafting Trip –Before your trip, ask the rafting guide or rafting company if there are plenty of places to stop along the riverbanks to pull the raft over and take a break. Use the breaks to allow preschoolers to walk or run around and explore with adult supervision, to offer snacks and to take bathroom breaks.

Pack Snacks – A hungry preschooler can turn into a grumpy preschooler. Keep preschoolers well fed during a rafting trip. Use breaks to serve lunch or a snack.

Have Preschoolers Watch Others Rafting – Allow preschoolers to watch rafting either from the riverbank or on a video. Preschoolers will be less anxious about rafting if they get to see rafting with their own eyes first.

Life Jacket Safety with Preschoolers

Rafting Companies and Outfitters Usually Supplies Life Jackets - Ask ahead of time to make sure, but rafting companies are required to supply all rafters with life jackets.

Make Preschoolers Wear a Life Jacket – When rafting, a life jacket is necessary. Although a preschooler may not want to wear the life jacket or think that a life jacket is uncomfortable, adult should never allow preschoolers to raft without a life jacket.

Model by Wearing a Life Jacket – All adults in the raft must model safety procedures and wear a life jacket. All adults in the raft should set a good safety example and keep their life jacket on for the entire rafting trip.

Choose the Right Size – Life jackets have tags sewn in them with the size and weight requirement printed on the tag. Before putting the life jacket on your preschooler, check the tag for the size and weight.

Adjust the Life Jacket – Many life jackets have belt adjustments on the outside of the jacket. Life jackets are meant to be worn snug against the body. Adjust the life jacket and have the guide from the rafting company inspect the fit of a preschooler's life jacket.

Helpful Tips for Parents

  • Screen time displaces physical activity. Every hour in front of a screen is an hour not spent in physical development. Enforce daily outdoor time before screen access.
  • Dance is one of the most complete physical activities for preschoolers: it develops bilateral coordination, rhythm, balance, spatial awareness, and emotional expression simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does physical activity affect my preschooler's sleep?

Physical activity is one of the strongest positive predictors of sleep quality and duration in preschoolers. Children who have sufficient vigorous physical activity during the day fall asleep faster, sleep more deeply, and wake less frequently than sedentary peers. The timing matters: vigorous activity in the late afternoon or evening (within 1–2 hours of bedtime) can delay sleep for some children — schedule the most vigorous play before 5pm when possible.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

  • 🧠 Brain-Body Connection — Research consistently shows that physical activity directly improves concentration, working memory, and academic readiness — making fitness time one of the highest-return educational investments in a preschooler's day.
  • 🏅 Physical Confidence — Successfully completing a physical challenge — climbing something scary, jumping a gap, learning a new skill — builds physical self-efficacy: the belief that effort leads to capability, which transfers to all learning domains.
  • ⚖️ Balance & Coordination — Activities that challenge balance — hopping on one foot, walking a line, navigating obstacles — develop the vestibular and proprioceptive systems that underlie all coordinated physical movement.
  • ❤️ Cardiovascular Health — Vigorous physical activity that elevates heart rate and quickens breathing builds cardiovascular fitness — and active preschoolers develop not just physical health but the energy, sleep quality, and mood that support learning.

Want to get outdoors as a family and promote healthy physical activity in nature for your preschooler? Consider a beginner family rafting trip padding down a river. Preschoolers as young as four years old can go rafting on many sections of calm rivers that are classified as Class I, which means that there are no white water rapids on the section of the river. If you have an adventurous preschooler, explore rafting as a family fun activity to experience the great outdoors and promote physical activity.
