Skip Counting Hop: Movement Math for Preschoolers

Skip counting — counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s rather than by ones — is one of the most important early math skills because it's the direct foundation of multiplication. Children who can fluently skip count by 2s understand the concept of "groups of 2" before they ever see a multiplication table. The hop version — actually jumping to each counted number on a physical number line — provides the gross motor and kinesthetic encoding that makes abstract number patterns memorable.

Setting Up the Number Line

  1. Use sidewalk chalk to write numbers 0–30 in a line, each about 30–40cm apart.
  2. Or use numbered paper plates taped to the floor at even intervals.
  3. Begin by hopping every number (counting by 1s) to establish the number line.

Skip Counting by 2s

  • Stand on 0. "Jump to 2!" Jump and land on 2, count aloud: "Two!"
  • "Jump to 4!" Land and count: "Four!"
  • Continue through 20 — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
  • Notice: "We skipped over all the odd numbers — they don't get a jump!"

Skip Counting by 5s and 10s

  • By 5s: big jumps — 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. Great for counting nickels.
  • By 10s: giant jumps — 10, 20, 30. Connect to dimes and decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should preschoolers start skip counting?

Counting by 10s can begin as early as age 3–4, as it's a natural extension of the counting-by-ones sequence children are already learning. Counting by 5s often follows shortly, connected to counting fingers: "All of these fingers on one hand is 5. Both hands is 10." Counting by 2s is typically introduced around age 5, as it requires understanding that numbers can be paired. These are informal exposures — formal expectation of skip counting mastery typically begins in kindergarten or first grade.
