PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Skip counting — counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s rather than by ones — is one of the most important early math skills because it's the direct foundation of multiplication. Children who can fluently skip count by 2s understand the concept of "groups of 2" before they ever see a multiplication table. The hop version — actually jumping to each counted number on a physical number line — provides the gross motor and kinesthetic encoding that makes abstract number patterns memorable.
Counting by 10s can begin as early as age 3–4, as it's a natural extension of the counting-by-ones sequence children are already learning. Counting by 5s often follows shortly, connected to counting fingers: "All of these fingers on one hand is 5. Both hands is 10." Counting by 2s is typically introduced around age 5, as it requires understanding that numbers can be paired. These are informal exposures — formal expectation of skip counting mastery typically begins in kindergarten or first grade.
