Patterns are everywhere in mathematics — in multiplication tables, in geometry, in algebra — and the ability to recognize, continue, and create patterns is foundational algebraic thinking. Preschool pattern work begins with simple AB patterns (red, blue, red, blue) and grows to AABB, ABC, and ABBC patterns. Children who develop strong pattern sense in preschool are better prepared for the algebraic thinking that formal mathematics will require.
A child is ready to advance when they can: (1) correctly extend a given AB pattern at least 4 more units, (2) identify the pattern rule without prompting, and (3) create their own AB pattern independently. These three milestones — extend, explain, create — apply at every level. Move to AABB when AB is fully consolidated; move to ABC only after AABB. Rushing progression creates shaky foundations; solid consolidation at each level makes the next level much easier.
