Puppet Interview: Oral Language Development for Preschoolers

Something remarkable happens when a puppet asks a question: children who refuse to answer an adult directly will answer the puppet enthusiastically. The puppet creates enough psychological distance that reluctant communicators feel safe speaking — and for children with language delays or anxiety, this effect can be transformative. Puppet interviews are a genuine research-backed technique used by speech-language pathologists and literacy specialists precisely because they bypass performance pressure while producing rich language output.

How to Use a Puppet Interview

  • After reading a story, the puppet (operated by an adult) "wants to know" about it.
  • "I fell asleep during the story — can you tell me what happened to the little pig?"
  • "I don't understand why the wolf was blowing the house — do you know?"
  • "If you were in the story, what would you do differently?"

Types of Questions to Ask

  • Recall: "What happened at the beginning of the story?"
  • Comprehension: "Why do you think the character did that?"
  • Inference: "How do you think the character felt when...?"
  • Opinion: "What would YOU have done?"
  • Prediction: "What do you think will happen next time?"

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the puppet need to be elaborate?

No — a simple sock puppet or even a hand with a drawn-on face works. The magic is in the performance, not the puppet's appearance. The adult should commit to the puppet's character — give it a consistent voice, make it move when talking, and have it look at the child when asking questions. Even a basic puppet operated with enthusiasm creates the necessary psychological buffer that makes children more willing to talk.
