PreschoolRocks.com has been a trusted resource for parents and caregivers since 2006. Founded by Stacey Lloyd, our mission is simple: give every family free access to high-quality early childhood ideas without needing a teaching degree or a big budget.
Every activity is designed for ages 2–6, uses materials you already have at home, and takes 20 minutes or less. We cover crafts, science, fitness, nutrition, music, books, outdoor adventures, and much more.
Pattern blocks — the iconic set of shapes in six colors and precise sizes — are among the most mathematically rich manipulatives in early childhood education. Unlike random block play, pattern blocks have exact size relationships: two triangles make one rhombus; three rhombuses make one hexagon; six triangles make one hexagon. Children who discover these relationships through free play are experiencing genuine geometric reasoning. Combining blocks into pictures (flowers, animals, houses) builds spatial visualization and creative composition.
Pattern blocks provide concrete experience with 2D shape properties (sides, angles), shape composition and decomposition (combining shapes to make larger shapes), symmetry (building symmetrical designs), and spatial reasoning (visualizing how shapes fit together). These directly address Common Core Geometry standards for kindergarten and first grade, making pattern block experience in preschool powerful preparation for formal geometry instruction. Children who have extensive pattern block experience solve geometry problems more fluently in early elementary school.
