Snowman Sock Craft

Snowman Sock Craft

Fill a white sock with rice or sand, tie it in two sections to form a snowman body, and decorate with buttons, a tiny scarf, and a carrot nose — a 3D snowman that never melts! These soft, tactile snowmen make adorable holiday gifts and decorations.

What You'll Need

  • White tube sock — one per snowman
  • White rice or sand — for filling
  • Rubber bands or twine — for tying sections
  • Black buttons — for eyes and buttons
  • Small carrot-colored button or orange felt — for the nose
  • Fabric scraps or ribbon — for the scarf
  • Small piece of black felt — for the hat

How to Do It

Step 1: Fill the sock. Pour rice into the sock until it's about two-thirds full.

Step 2: Form the snowman. Tie twine tightly about one-third from the top to separate the head from the body.

Step 3: Close the top. Tie or rubber-band the top of the sock closed, then fold it down into a hat shape.

Step 4: Add the face. Glue or safety-pin small black buttons for eyes and an orange button or felt for the nose.

Step 5: Add a scarf. Tie a small fabric strip around the neck.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

3D form building — Understanding how filling and constraining a flexible material creates shape.

Soft sculpture — Fabric and stuffed materials are an entirely different sculptural medium.

Tips & Variations

  • Add a top hat made from black felt rolled into a cylinder.
  • Make a family of snowmen in different sock sizes.
  • Use buttons in different arrangements for varied expressions.

My Two Cents

White socks with a ribbed texture look more snow-like than smooth socks. After filling, pat the sock firmly to distribute the rice evenly before tying.
