Dried pumpkin seeds make beautiful, free art materials. Painted or left natural, they can be arranged and glued into mandalas, mosaics, pictures, or pattern tiles. The organic shapes and warm ivory color of pumpkin seeds lend a natural beauty to any design.
Step 1: Prepare seeds. If painting, dip seeds in fall-colored paint (orange, red, yellow, brown) and spread to dry.
Step 2: Draw a guide. Lightly draw a design on cardstock: a pumpkin outline, a turkey, a geometric mandala, or a fall tree.
Step 3: Glue seeds. Fill the design by gluing seeds within the outlines, close together for a mosaic effect.
Step 4: Dry completely. Seeds shift until fully dry — let sit undisturbed for at least an hour.
Step 5: Display. The finished seed art has a beautiful tactile, natural quality.
Mosaic technique — Covering a shape by filling it with small repeated elements is a foundational mosaic skill.
Nature and seasonal connection — Working with seeds harvested from real pumpkins connects art to seasonal cycles.
The larger and flatter the seeds, the easier they are to handle. Reserve carving day pumpkin seeds for this project — wash, dry, and store them in a paper bag until art-making day.
