A paper pinwheel is one of the most satisfying Fourth of July crafts because it transforms immediately into a working toy the moment it is complete. Children color paper in red, white, and blue, cut the corners toward the center, and fold alternating corners to a center pin — and the pinwheel spins in the first breeze. Parade-perfect and made in 20 minutes.
Step 1: Color the paper. Divide the square into triangular quadrants by drawing diagonal lines corner to corner. Color alternating triangles red and blue, leaving the other two white. This creates the pinwheel's color pattern.
Step 2: Cut the corners. Cut from each corner toward the center, stopping about an inch before the middle. You should have four triangular flaps that are still connected at the center.
Step 3: Fold to the center. Fold one corner from each flap to the center — alternate corners, not all four. Do not crease the folds — the curve is what makes the pinwheel catch wind.
Step 4: Pin the pinwheel. Push the pin through all four folded corners at the center, then through the back of the square, through the bead, and into the eraser of a pencil or the end of a dowel. The pin should be secure but the pinwheel must spin freely.
Step 5: Test the spin. Hold the pinwheel up and blow across it — it should spin easily. If it does not, loosen the pin slightly.
