Make Paper Fans: Simple Accordion Fold Craft for Preschoolers

Paper fan making is a craft that teaches one of the most satisfying paper folding techniques — the accordion fold — while producing something functional children can actually use. The process of decorating, folding, and pinching builds multiple skills in sequence, and the finished fan provides a natural cooling breeze that children associate with their own effort. "I made this!" gains real meaning when the thing they made also does something.

What You'll Need

  • A sheet of paper (A4 or letter size works; thicker paper makes sturdier fans)
  • Markers, crayons, or watercolor to decorate
  • A rubber band or tape to secure the base
  • Scissors (optional, to round the top edge)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Decorate the paper first — designs show better when the paper is flat before folding.
  2. Fold one short edge over about 2 cm, then fold back the same width in the opposite direction (accordion fold).
  3. Continue folding back and forth until the whole sheet is folded into a narrow pleated strip.
  4. Hold the bottom tightly and secure it with a rubber band or wrap tape around the base.
  5. Fan out the top to open the folds into a fan shape.

Decoration Ideas

  • Rainbow stripes down the paper, one color per fold
  • Dots and swirls with metallic markers
  • Nature prints using the leaf painting technique before folding
  • Children's names in large block letters

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I help children who struggle with accordion folding?

Use pre-scored fold lines (lightly press the back of a butter knife along ruler lines) so children can feel where each fold goes. Start with 4 folds only on a smaller strip of paper — mastering 4 folds is more satisfying than struggling with 12. Gradually increase the number of folds as confidence grows. Work side-by-side and fold together with the child's hands following yours for the first attempt.
