A handmade necklace that a mother can actually wear — made from polymer clay, painted pasta, or beads — is a treasure that often gets worn proudly. When the necklace is made BY the child, the wearing of it becomes an ongoing act of love between parent and child.
Step 1: Make the pendant. Roll clay to ¼ inch thickness. Press out a heart shape with the cutter. Use a straw or toothpick to poke a hole for the cord before baking.
Step 2: Stamp initials (optional). Press letter stamps or a toothpick to carve the child's initial.
Step 3: Bake. Follow clay package directions. Let cool completely.
Step 4: Paint and seal. Paint with acrylic paint, let dry, then seal with a coat of clear glaze.
Step 5: String on cord. Thread through the hole and knot at the desired length.
Sculptural skills — Working with clay to produce a precise shape develops three-dimensional thinking.
Gift intentionality — Making jewelry for someone to wear is a deeply personal act of love.
Supervise the oven baking carefully — polymer clay baking temperature and time varies by brand. Sculpey and Fimo both work well. The sealer coat is essential; without it, the paint will chip off with wearing.
