The red poppy is the symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers — a tradition that comes from the poem "In Flanders Fields." Making a poppy craft on Memorial Day introduces children to the concept of honoring those who sacrificed and to the power of a flower as a symbol of remembrance.
Step 1: Scrunch the petals. Slightly scrunch 4–6 red tissue paper squares or pull apart a red cupcake liner.
Step 2: Layer the petals. Stack and slightly offset the petals for a natural flower look.
Step 3: Attach the center. Pinch the center together and wrap with a green pipe cleaner. Add a black pompom glued to the center.
Step 4: Shape the flower. Gently open and cup each petal.
Step 5: Display. Display poppies in a vase or give to a veteran.
Symbol and meaning — Poppies as a symbol of remembrance introduces children to the idea that objects carry meaning.
Cultural history — Learning about Memorial Day traditions connects to American civic life.
This is an opportunity for an age-appropriate conversation about what Memorial Day means — that we remember and say thank you to people who helped keep our country safe. Keep the conversation gentle and focus on gratitude rather than the difficult realities of war.
