Flower Crown Craft

Flower Crown Craft

A flower crown made with real or silk flowers is the most joyfully wearable Mother's Day gift a preschooler can give — and present with the instruction to wear it immediately for maximum effect. Children wire or tape flower heads around a base of twisted pipe cleaners or ribbon, creating a crown sized perfectly for the adult recipient's head.

What You'll Need

  • Pipe cleaners — 6–8 in green or floral colors, twisted together into a crown base
  • Silk flowers — from a dollar or craft store; real flowers can also be used for immediate gifting
  • Floral wire or small rubber bands — for attaching flowers
  • Ribbon — to wrap the wire base and add a decorative bow
  • Optional: small beads, buttons — threaded between flowers for texture

How to Do It

Step 1: Make the crown base. Twist four green pipe cleaners together end-to-end for a long flexible strip. Form it into a circle sized for an adult head. Twist the ends together securely.

Step 2: Wrap with ribbon. Wrap green ribbon around the entire pipe cleaner base, securing with dots of glue. This covers the metallic pipe cleaner and creates a natural-looking vine base.

Step 3: Attach the flowers. Strip silk flower heads from their stems. Wrap a small piece of floral wire around the base of each flower head, then twist the wire around the crown base. Space flowers evenly.

Step 4: Fill gaps. Add small leaf sprigs, beads, or small flower buds between the main flowers to fill any bare patches.

Step 5: Add a ribbon tie. Attach two 12-inch ribbon lengths to the back of the crown for tying it on, or leave as a rigid crown that slips on.

Step 6: Present. Give with the instruction to try it on immediately.

Skills Your Child Will Develop

Three-dimensional construction — Building a wearable circular structure teaches spatial thinking.

Design sense — Spacing flowers evenly and combining different types develops aesthetic judgment.

Gift presentation — A wearable gift that is put on in the moment of receiving creates an immediate, shared experience.

Tips & Variations

  • Use fresh flowers from the garden for a real flower crown — deliver same-day.
  • Add a small sprig of lavender or rosemary for fragrance.
  • Make a matching smaller crown for the child to wear alongside the recipient.

My Two Cents

Dollar stores and dollar sections of craft stores sell silk flowers in large bundles that are perfect for this project. Buy more than you need — children are selective and will want to try different flowers before committing.
