Family Photo Frame

Family Photo Frame

A decorated picture frame holding a child's photo or a family photo is one of the most treasured Mother's Day gifts. Children decorate a plain wooden or foam frame with paint, gems, shells, beads — whatever feels special — then a photo is slipped inside to complete the gift.

What You'll Need

  • Plain wooden or foam picture frame — 4×6 or 5×7; available at craft stores
  • Acrylic paint — in the recipient's favorite colors
  • Decorative items — adhesive gems, shells, buttons, mosaic tiles, glitter glue
  • Mod Podge or clear sealer — to protect the finished frame
  • A photo — printed and ready to slip inside

How to Do It

Step 1: Paint the frame. Apply a base coat. Let dry.

Step 2: Decorate. Children glue gems, shells, or other items freely. Let their instincts guide the arrangement.

Step 3: Seal. Brush with Mod Podge once completely dry.

Step 4: Insert the photo. Slide in a special photo.

Step 5: Present with love.

🎓 Skills Your Child Will Develop

Aesthetic decision-making — Choosing and placing decorations develops personal taste.

Object permanence and memory — Creating a frame for a photo connects to understanding how photos preserve memories.

Tips & Variations

  • Add the child's handprint in paint on the frame before decorating.
  • Write a word or message with paint marker on the frame.
  • Use seashells collected on a beach trip for personal meaning.

My Two Cents

Buy frames in bulk from the dollar store — they're often 4 for $1 and just as good as craft store versions for this purpose.
